Interview insights
Q: What would you say is your biggest strength?
A: My biggest strength of character is my ability to find connections between nearly anything. During my time at university, I delved into art history and was inspired by how art reflects its surrounding context. Every paint stroke and colour choice on the canvas tells a story about the political, social, and historical environment it exists in. This analytical ability fuels my innovative thinking.
For instance, in my role at Oronegro Jewellery, I developed a barcode management system. I drew inspiration from a labelling system implemented by my former employer at a chocolate boutique, where labels were pre-printed and organised in folders. This method facilitated the labelling process, allowing any staff member to participate effectively. By incorporating this system, I improved efficiency and accessibility within our team.
What is your greatest weakness?
I would say my greatest weakness is also one of my greatest strengths—my innovative creativity. When faced with a problem, I naturally come up with a wide range of solutions and approaches. However, this can sometimes lead to overcomplicating ideas or underestimating the time required to execute them.
To improve, I’ve been working on streamlining my creative process and practicing moderation. Collaboration and feedback have been key to helping me refine my ideas and ensure that I stay focused on the most effective solutions.
One turning point was during my Web Development course at Dev Academy, where I was introduced to the concept of a Minimum Viable Product (MVP). This approach has inspired me to focus on developing a strong foundation that meets all the essential criteria before expanding on ideas. By setting an initial benchmark, I can then explore ways to stretch and grow without losing sight of the project's core objectives.
Q:Tell me about a challenging situation and how you handled it.
A: A customer brought in a deeply significant piece of jewellery for restoration, and it had been on our project list for some time. Eager to get the process moving, I proposed an alternative repair solution, which the customer agreed to. Unfortunately, due to a miscommunication, my colleague, who was tasked with the repair, misunderstood the instructions in my notes and cut the stone in a way that could not be undone. This was part of the alternative solution I had suggested, but it wasn't the final decision I had intended to clarify.
My main goal was to address the situation with the customer as swiftly and transparently as possible, while also ensuring that we handled it internally to prevent similar misunderstandings in the future.
I immediately contacted the customer by phone and email, explained the situation, and sent photos to show her what had happened. I took responsibility for the miscommunication, sincerely apologised, and offered a solution: we would carve a similar piece of stone, closely matching the original, free of charge as compensation.
Internally, I spoke with my colleague, and we agreed that to avoid future mistakes, I would talk through any complex or unusual orders in person rather than relying solely on notes. He also committed to checking in with me if more clarity was needed.
Although the customer was understandably disappointed, she accepted the proposed solution. The experience highlighted the importance of clear, consistent communication within the team. Moving forward, it reinforced our collaborative approach to ensuring accuracy in our work.
Describe a project you are proud of
I’m particularly proud of the development and rollout of the inventory management system I implemented at Oronegro Jewellery. Before this project, the system was entirely paper-based, which led to errors and inefficiencies. My aim was to digitise the process, minimise mistakes, and create a system that would streamline business planning.
This project allowed me to bring together a range of skills: the analytical thinking I developed during my art history studies, the Agile practices I learnt at Dev Academy, and the marketing insights I’ve gained through my freelance work with musical artists.
The system I developed runs on an iPad using Shopify POS. While we manually import payment data due to the lower running costs of our current card reader, the process remains efficient. Production data is tracked in Google Sheets, which I enhanced from an existing spreadsheet. I created a barcoding system, assigning each piece a unique serial code and developing a pricing structure organised into categories for easy access.
Once the pieces are recorded in the spreadsheet, I import the data into Shopify using CSV uploads. I also manage the product photography, shooting and editing images in the Lightroom app. Although I’ve experimented with using a DSLR camera for higher quality images, I’m currently weighing up the time it takes versus the efficiency of using my phone.
Introducing serial codes has significantly improved our processes. We can now display items in-store and sell them online simultaneously, which has eliminated the risk of selling the same item twice—an issue we previously encountered before integrating Shopify POS with our website.
At present, I’m focused on refining the data entry process to make it faster and more efficient. I’m also working on developing documentation to simplify training for future staff, ensuring that the system is as straightforward and user-friendly as possible.
