Certificate design

The Process

1. Discovery & Research

  • Attended planning meetings with the wider Exceed team

  • Reviewed prior conference materials

  • Identified opportunities to refresh the aesthetic while protecting brand integrity

2. Visual Direction

  • Used existing brand colours and typography

  • Introduced a window-frame motif as a subtle nod to Exceed’s services

  • Adapted inspiration from LaserCon branding into a distinct, conference-specific logo

  • Set a professional, simple, cohesive tone across all touchpoints

3. Asset Design

Produced deliverables including:

  • Static & animated conference logo

  • Branded presentation templates

  • Agendas (print & digital)

  • Name tags automated via Canva Data Importer

  • Sponsor packs & post-event thank you letters

  • Email layouts & newsletter templates

  • Posters & directional signage

  • Animated event kickoff video

  • Seating charts & printed table centrepieces

  • QR signage for interactive elements (e.g., charity auction)

  • Attendee & sponsor feedback surveys

4. Collaboration

  • Maintained momentum via regular Teams check-ins despite remote work

  • Liaised with venue staff for digital display specifications

  • Incorporated feedback on font size and colour contrast to improve accessibility

Challenges & Solutions

Challenge: No access to Adobe Illustrator for vector work
Solution: Used Adobe Express + Canva as workarounds to maintain quality

Results

  • Saved budget by keeping all design work in-house

  • Automated name tag creation — reducing manual admin time

  • Positive stakeholder feedback on the animated logo & centrepieces

  • Charity auction raised $14,000, boosted by QR donation posters

  • 57/70 attendees engaged with Slido, submitting 27 live questions

  • Identified new efficiency opportunity — using Data Importer for future presentation packs

Reflection

This project sharpened my end-to-end event design skills — from concept to execution — and strengthened my workflow in Notion for project tracking.

Experience from the Smith&Smith "Best of New Zealand" event helped me approach this confidently and adapt quickly to challenges.

Key Takeaway

Establishing the visual direction early allowed for smoother execution, consistent branding, and high-quality deliverables — all while keeping production in-house.
